“The fury of the virus illustrates the folly of war.” A Pandemic Opportunity for Peace

The CPT Iraqi Kurdistan team joins the call for a global ceasefire as a step toward peace while the world faces the coronavirus pandemic. Joining many nations, agencies, and people, the CPT IK team supports UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ call to “end the sickness of war and fight the disease that is ravaging our world. It starts by stopping the fighting everywhere. Now. That is what our human family needs, now more than ever.”

Secretary-General Guterres reminds the global human community that the virus “does not care about nationality or ethnicity, faction or faith. It attacks all, relentlessly.” Speaking to all people and nations, the top United Nations leader declared, “The fury of the virus illustrates the folly of war. That is why today, I am calling for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world. It is time to put armed conflict on lockdown and focus together on the true fight of our lives.”

The UN Chief called on warring parties to cease all hostilities, set aside animosity, and “silence the guns; stop the artillery; end the airstrikes. This is crucial to help create corridors for life-saving aid, open windows for diplomacy, and bring hope to places among the most vulnerable to #COVID19.”

The CPT IK team’s primary focus in Iraqi Kurdistan is to accompany civilians who are targeted by Turkey and Iran’s military bombardment and to amplify their voices to the world.

In solidarity with the people who experience these bombings, we call for an end to all acts of war, especially where civilians are at risk from both military bombardment and COVID-19.
