
On 20 July, nine Arab tourists were killed and 26 injured in the village of Parakhe near Zakho in northwestern Iraqi Kurdistan. They were killed by a mortar bombardment from a Turkish military base on Khamtir mountain. The Turkish government has not apologized for the attack and refuses to accept any responsibility. One of the local men who helped with delivering the dying and wounded to the hospital was Yousif Sindy. CPT first met Yousif on 17 June after two of his relatives were injured by a Turkish bombardment while tending to their fields. He has a message for you from Parakhe.

Turkey has built 4 military bases around Hirure village. Civilians are being targeted in these bombings. Hirure is one of the last remaining villages since Turkey invaded. Despite the Turkish bombardments, Hirure’s residents are still resisting by remaining and continuing to fast and pray.

Students in cities throughout Iraqi Kurdistan gathered peacefully to ask the government to pay them the student allowance that was cut in 2014 due to the economic crisis. Security forces responded with tear gas, water spray and violent arrests.The first demonstration was held on the 21st, these videos are from the third day of protests in Sulaimani, on the 23rd. Young people are angry at the way they feel ignored by the government and the violence from security forces that their request has been met with.

Guhdar Zebari is an independent journalist from Iraqi Kurdistan. He was arrested from his home on the 22 October 2019 and taken to an unknown location. He eventually appeared in court on 15-16 February 2021 and was sentenced to 6 years in prison on false charges of threatening national security. He is one of the 81 Badinan Prisoners arrested in a crackdown on Freedom of Expression by the KRG.
In October 2021 he managed to smuggle out this letter written on a used cigarette packet and it was released to the media.

Sherwan’s son asks for his father’s freedom. On June 27, 2021, the Court of Cassation in Erbil announced that it upholds the sentencing of the journalist Sherwan Sherwani on fabricated charges of espionage and sabotage.

Since August 2020, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has arrested more than 50 people in the Badinan region of Iraqi Kurdistan for criticizing corruption and organizing demonstrations.

Kak Awat served as the headmaster of the Zewka village school for several years. On 26 September 2019 Turkish military bombardment forced the villagers to flee their homes.

Kak Hamad Ameen was the village leader of Zewka. The people of Zewka were forcibly displaced by Turkish Military bombardment in September 2019.

On the 27th of September the villagers of Zewka was forced to flee their home in the mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan due to Turkish military cross-border bombing. The children ask for an end to the violence against them and for the safety to return to their homes.

On October the 4th the CPT team was staying in the Assyrian village of Khalilan when they witnessed Turkish military bombing near by in the village of Hezanke. Hezanke, Khalilan and all the villages of the Nahla valley in Iraqi Kurdistan are occupied by civilians. They are predominately farming communties whose peaceful existence is continually threatened by Turkish cross-border aggression.

The Kurdistan Regional Government has ordered civilians to live in quarantine to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Iraqi Kurdistan. In March and April the Turkish military continues to bomb villages in Iraqi Kurdistan, while people live under quarantine. Villagers now face both the threat of COVID-19 and Turkey’s cross-border bombings.

For over 30 years Turkey and Iran have crossed the borders into Iraqi Kurdistan and bombed villages and civilians. The families of those who have lost loved ones call on people and governments around the world to put a stop to these human rights abuses
