Ghudar Zebari Released from Prison!
This afternoon, 17 January, independent journalist Guhdar Zebari was released after spending a total of 39 months and 26 days in prison.
Guhdar was convicted of three charges. Initially he was convicted for conducting espionage and breaching the national security of the Iraqi Kurdistan region. This resulted in a hefty six-year prison sentence. However, due to public outcry and advocacy efforts, Guhdar was granted a special amnesty by the KRG president, reducing his imprisonment by 60%. After completing his first prison sentence, he was convicted again while waiting in prison for altering the logo of his car, resulting in a six-month prison term. Shortly after completing his second sentence, he was convicted of possessing a hunting rifle in his car without the required legal permission. As a consequence he was sentenced for six more months behind bars.
CPT observed many violations and concerns during the duration of Guhdar’s judicial process such as a lack of a sufficient evidence, a fair and impartial trial, rights for defense lawyers, and more. The judicial system is susceptible to political interference and can be used as a tool to attack freedom of expression and journalists and activists for their work.
On October 22, 2020, Guhdar Zebari, along with 80 other journalists and activists from the Badinan area, were arrested within a span of three months. 79 of them have been released, while independent journalists Sherwan Sherwani and Qaraman Shukry, remain in prison.

لە ٢٢ی تشرینی یەکەمی ٢٠٢٠دا، گوهدار زێباری و ٨٠ ڕۆژنامەوان و چالاکوانی تری دەڤەری بادینان لە ماوەی سێ مانگدا دەستگیرکران. لە ئێستادا ٧٩ لە دەستگیرکراوەکان ئازادکراون و بەتەنیا هەردوو ڕۆژنامەوانی سەربەخۆ شێروان شێروانی و قارەمان شوکری لە زینداندا ماونەتەوە.
