Earlier this year, CPT met with the families of the Kandakolen Massacre. The Kandaokolen Massacre occurred on August 15th, 2000, and is the incident with the largest casualty count as a result of Turkish military operations inside Iraqi Kurdistan. 30 people were killed and 13 were injured when Turkish fighter jets targeted a nomadic encampment twice in the Kandakolen highlands inside the Sidakan district. Fifteen children were killed and nine children were injured, an alarmingly high rate of child casualties. Survivors also described two helicopters dropping acid onto the scene of the incident.
