Journalist Sentenced to Prison

Omed Barushky was today sentenced to 6 months in prison under Article 2 of the Law to Prevent the Misuse of Telecommunications Equipment in the Kurdistan Region (Law No.6 of 2008).

CPT, Human Rights Watch, CPJ, and UNAMI have made complaints before that this law is being used to silence people critical of the government and limit freedom of expression in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Journalists and civil activists such as Omed Barushky are being convicted and given prison sentences under this law despite continued complaints internally and by the international community that it threatens the democratic process.

هەرچەندە پێشتریش ڕێکخراوەکانی CPT, HRW, CPJ, UNAMI ناڕەزایەتیان سەبارەت بەوە دەربڕیوە کە ئەم یاسایە لە هەرێمی کوردستان بە مەبەستی کپکردنی ئەو دەنگانە بە کار هاتووە کە ڕەخنەیان لە حکومەت گرتووە و هەروەها بۆ بەرتەسککردنەوەی ئازادی ڕادەربڕین لە هەرێمی کوردستان بە کار هێنراوە.

بەڵام، سەرەڕای هەموو ئەو ناڕەزایەتیانە کە لە ناو هەرێمی کوردستان و کۆمەڵگەی نێودەوڵەتی هەیە هێشتا ڕۆژنامەوانان و چالاکوانانی مەدەنی وەک ئۆمێد بەروشکی بە پێی ئەم یاسایە سزا دەدرێن و زیندانی دەکرێن وبە کارهێنانی ئەم یاسایە دەکرێت مەترسیەک بێت بۆسەر پرۆسەی دیمۆکراسی.
